Jewelry Care
925 Sterling Silver: Silver is an incredibly precious, brilliant, and highly sought-after metal. Wearing that special piece of sterling silver jewelry is a delight, save for one small, inevitable detail: darkening or tarnishing.
WHAT IS TARNISH?
Tarnish occurs as a result of silver reacting with hydrogen sulfide (H2S) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) present in the air.
The speed at which your sterling silver darkens depends on many factors: where you live (humidity, proximity to pollution sources, etc.), your skin's pH levels, the chemicals you are exposed to, the type of water in your area, how you store the silver, and even the foods you eat. Copper—often used in 925 sterling silver alloys—also reacts with oxygen and oxidizes, contributing to this effect.
The only practical solution is to identify the substances that accelerate darkening and try to limit your silver jewelry's exposure to them.
Sterling silver should avoid contact with the following:
- Hair dyes
- Swimming (chlorinated and salt water)
- Physical exercise (sweat)
- Cigarette smoke
- Certain paints
- Phosphate-containing detergents
- Body lotions, perfumes, hairsprays, sunscreens, and oils
- Foods such as onions, egg yolks, mustard, salt, vinegar, salad dressings, and olives
*Products such as turpentine, nail polish remover (containing acetone), bleach, ammonia, and alcohol will not only damage the silver in your jewelry—potentially causing irreparable harm—but can also cause pitting in gemstones.
HOW TO STORE YOUR SILVER JEWELRY
Ideally, store sterling silver in a cool, dry place (heat and humidity accelerate the oxidation or blackening process); ...preferably wrapped in acid-free tissue paper (not standard tissue paper) or a tarnish-resistant cloth. Wrapping the pieces individually in a moisture-free plastic bag will delay oxidation, but ensure the silver does not come into direct contact with the bag. Try placing a piece of white chalk in your storage area; chalk is a traditional remedy said to prevent tarnishing. You can also place silica packets (the small sachets often found in medicine bottles or with new shoes) in your jewelry box to absorb moisture. Once oxidation has occurred, it is important to know how to remove it without damaging your silver jewelry.
HOW TO CLEAN YOUR 925 STERLING SILVER JEWELRY
Silver is a soft metal; even mild polishing products cause abrasion, removing a small amount of silver each time the piece is polished.
Clean the jewelry with soap and water (not detergent), polish it with a soft cloth (not tissue paper), and dry it thoroughly. Soap may slightly dull the silver, but detergents can leave spots if not rinsed off completely.
